Shoreline Restoration in Bethlehem, NCRip-rap on Lake Hickory · Alexander County
Long Alexander County frontages on the north shore of Lake Hickory, taking wake from the busier side across.
What the Water Does
on This Side
Bethlehem is an unincorporated community in southern Alexander County, straight north of Hickory on NC-127. It has grown steadily as people moved out of the city without going far, and it holds much of the north shore of Lake Hickory.
The Alexander County shore faces Hickory across the water, which means it takes wake from the busier side as well as its own. Frontages here tend to run longer than they do in the city, so a failure is often a hundred feet of bank rather than one bad corner.
The bank itself. Less built-up than the city side, and more of it still in its natural slope. That is an advantage: an unarmored bank that has not been walled, filled or landscaped is usually a cleaner job than one that has.
When Hickory is drawn down over winter, a long Bethlehem frontage shows you plainly which sections have been undercut and which have not. It is the cheapest survey available.
The work is the same wherever the water is: rip-rap set along the waterline to hold the bank, keyed in at the toe below the normal level, with the stone sized for what that stretch actually takes. More on how that works is on the shoreline restoration page.

Access in Bethlehem
Generally good. Lots are larger, there is more room to stage stone, and the approach to the water is rarely squeezed between a house and a boundary the way it is on a city lot.
Generally yes, and easily. Lots up here are larger, there is room to stage stone, and the approach is rarely squeezed between a house and a boundary. The requirement itself does not change from town to town: somewhere on the property to drop stone, and a seven-foot clear opening to the water.
Work at the waterline on Lake Hickory sits under Catawba-Wateree shoreline management as well as Alexander County permitting. We establish which apply before ordering stone, so the job is not stopped halfway through.

Bethlehem Shoreline — Common Questions
What property owners on this water ask us most. If yours is not here, call (828) 455-0928.
Yes. Shoreline work follows the lake, so the Bethlehem shore is inside what we take on for rip-rap and bank repair.
No. We work out which sections have failed, which are sound, and which are heading that way, and you can take it in stages. Doing the failed sections and leaving good bank alone is usually the better value.
Usually. There is nothing to take out, nothing to work around, and the slope is already close to what the stone wants to sit on.
Long frontage does not have to be done in one go. We price the sections that have failed, note the ones heading that way, and you decide how much of it happens this year.
Generally yes, and easily. Lots up here are larger, there is room to stage stone, and the approach is rarely squeezed between a house and a boundary.
