Conover Shoreline

What the Water Does
on This Side

Conover sits between Hickory and Newton where I-40 meets US-70, a manufacturing and rail town rather than a lake town. It is inland — the water is a few minutes north rather than at the bottom of the garden.

Conover itself is not lakefront, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we do here is two things: shoreline work on Lake Hickory for Conover owners whose lots sit a short run north, and the same stone work inland — pond banks, creek banks and drainage channels that are losing ground to water that has nowhere to go.

The bank itself. Inland Conover is Catawba Valley clay with rock not far down, the same ground that makes drainage the thing we are most often called out for in town.

For a Conover owner with a Lake Hickory lot, winter drawdown is when the toe is readable. Inland, the equivalent is a hard rain, which is when a pond bank or a channel shows you what it has been doing.

The work is the same wherever the water is: rip-rap set along the waterline to hold the bank, keyed in at the toe below the normal level, with the stone sized for what that stretch actually takes. More on how that works is on the shoreline restoration page. Everything else we do in town is on the Conover services page.

Getting To It

Access in Conover

Inland work in Conover is generally straightforward. For a Lake Hickory lot held by a Conover owner, access is whatever that lot allows, and we look at it the same way we would any other.

The question rarely comes up here. Inland work is all from the land by definition, and a Lake Hickory lot is assessed the same way any other is. The requirement itself does not change from town to town: somewhere on the property to drop stone, and a seven-foot clear opening to the water.

Work at the waterline on Lake Hickory sits under Catawba-Wateree shoreline management as well as Catawba County permitting. We establish which apply before ordering stone, so the job is not stopped halfway through.

Common Questions

Conover Shoreline — Common Questions

What property owners on this water ask us most. If yours is not here, call (828) 455-0928.

Is Conover on the lake?

No. Conover is inland, between Hickory and Newton. Lake Hickory is a short run north, and we work shoreline there for Conover property owners, but the town itself is not waterfront.

Do you set rip-rap away from the lake?

Yes. Angular stone is what holds wherever water moves with force behind it — a pond bank, a creek that has started cutting, a drainage channel carrying more than it was shaped for. It is the same stone and the same thinking as a lake bank.

What is the difference between rip-rap and river rock on a pond bank?

Rip-rap is angular and locks together, so it stays put where water moves. River rock is rounded and rolls. River rock belongs in a dry creek bed you have to look at; rip-rap belongs where the water has force.

What does shoreline work cost in Conover?

Inland stone work in Conover prices like dirt work, because that is mostly what it is. A Lake Hickory lot held by a Conover owner prices like any other lake job, on length, stone size and access.

Can you work a Conover shoreline from the land?

The question rarely comes up here. Inland work is all from the land by definition, and a Lake Hickory lot is assessed the same way any other is.
