Shoreline Restoration in Connelly Springs, NCRip-rap on Lake Rhodhiss · Burke County

Lake Rhodhiss between two dams, where the level moves and the wetting and drying does the damage.

Connelly Springs Shoreline

What the Water Does
on This Side

Connelly Springs is a small Burke County town on the I-40 corridor west of Valdese, rural in character with the Catawba running north of it. Lake Rhodhiss is the water here — not Norman, and not Hickory.

Rhodhiss is the least forgiving of the three on a bank, for a reason that has nothing to do with boats. It is a narrow lake between two dams, so its level moves with upstream releases as well as with the season. A shoreline here goes through more wetting and drying than one on a big lake, and that cycle takes a bank apart from the inside.

The bank itself. Burke County ground: clay with rock in it, steeper than the lower Catawba, and quick to move once water gets behind it. A bare bank on Rhodhiss does not stay put.

Rhodhiss moves more than either of the other two. A bank that looks sound at full pond can show a foot of undercut when the water drops, and that is the view worth acting on.

The work is the same wherever the water is: rip-rap set along the waterline to hold the bank, keyed in at the toe below the normal level, with the stone sized for what that stretch actually takes. More on how that works is on the shoreline restoration page. Everything else we do in town is on the Connelly Springs services page.

Getting To It

Access in Connelly Springs

Rural lots with room to work, for the most part. Getting down to the water is usually a question of ground conditions rather than gateposts, and wet ground stops dirt work here the same as anywhere.

Usually yes. Burke County lots out here have room; the limit is more often wet ground than gateposts, and wet ground stops dirt work the same as anywhere. The requirement itself does not change from town to town: somewhere on the property to drop stone, and a seven-foot clear opening to the water.

Work at the waterline on Lake Rhodhiss sits under Catawba-Wateree shoreline management as well as Burke County permitting. We establish which apply before ordering stone, so the job is not stopped halfway through.

Common Questions

Connelly Springs Shoreline — Common Questions

What property owners on this water ask us most. If yours is not here, call (828) 455-0928.

Do you work Lake Rhodhiss?

Yes. Rhodhiss is on the Catawba between Lake James and Lake Hickory, and Connelly Springs frontage is inside the area we cover for shoreline work.

Why does my bank look fine in summer and undercut in winter?

Because you are seeing different parts of it. At full pond the water hides the toe. When Rhodhiss drops you are looking at the part that fails first, and that is the honest view of the shoreline.

Does Rhodhiss need approval the same as the bigger lakes?

Yes. It is part of the same Catawba-Wateree system as Norman and Hickory, so shoreline management applies on top of Burke County permitting.

What does shoreline work cost in Connelly Springs?

On Rhodhiss the bank behind the waterline is often as much of the job as the stone, because the wet-dry cycle has already loosened it. We price what actually has to be rebuilt, not just what is visible at full pond.

Can you work a Connelly Springs shoreline from the land?

Usually yes. Burke County lots out here have room; the limit is more often wet ground than gateposts, and wet ground stops dirt work the same as anywhere.
