If we can bring a machine and trucks down over the land, it is priced like the dirt work it mostly is. If the only way in is off the water, you are paying for a barge and everything that comes with it. We walk it, measure it, and leave you a written price that does not move.

Usually, yes — that is the whole point of coming at it from the land. We need somewhere on the property to drop stone and at least a seven-foot clear opening through any gate or retaining wall between there and the water. If a machine can get down to the bank, the barge comes out of the job and a large part of the cost comes out with it. If the only way in is by water, we will tell you that at the estimate rather than after.

Usually yes, and it depends on the lake. Work at the waterline on Lake Norman, Lake Hickory and Lake James sits under Catawba-Wateree shoreline management as well as county permitting; Moss Lake is run separately and has its own rules. We establish which apply before ordering stone, so the job is not stopped halfway through.

On open water, usually. A wall is a hard flat face: it reflects the wake back out, the water scours the base, and one day it leans or goes over in a section. Stone takes the same wake apart instead of arguing with it, and when a few rocks do shift you re-set that stretch rather than rebuilding a wall. Where a wall already exists and is still sound, rip-rap set at the toe in front of it often buys it years.

Look for the bank cut back under itself at the waterline, tree roots hanging in open air, soil dropping into the water in slabs, or a retaining wall starting to lean out. Any of those means the water is already taking ground. A shoreline that is still sound but tired is a much cheaper job than one that has started to go, which is the argument for looking at it early.
